Christmas Movie Drinking Game - Hair of the Dog
Originally published December 2016
It's that time of year again. That time of year for bloggers like myself to use the phrase, "that time of year again." That time of year for families to get together for the sake of tradition and (dis)function. That time of year for people to prepare themselves for the end of the year. For us around here, it's that time to watch the most conventional and unconventional movies that happen to take place during this time of year. So why not drink to it?
Regardless of what your favorite Christmas movie is, whether it's something heart-warming like It's a Wonderful Life, or action-packed like Die Hard, or something out of left-field as I Come in Peace, these movies tend to have a few things in common that are worth pointing out with a shot-glass or beer in hand. Be aware, the rules that follow will probably be more intoxicating for the cheesiest and lamest Christmas movie, so drink responsibly. Of course, these rules can be added on to the Universal Drinking Rules of our Hair of the Dog feature.
Christmas Movie Drinking Game
It conveniently begins to snow for some reason.
A Christmas miracle occurs, or Christmas "magic" is used.
Someone says something along the lines of "It's Christmas (Eve)" to justify their point of view. For example, "For Pete's sake, it's Christmas! Think of the kids!"
Sleigh bells jingle, or a classic Christmas song starts playing.
Someone starts singing or speaking in rhymes in a film that isn't already based on a song/poem. (ie Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer does not count)
FINISH YOUR DRINK IF: Someone learns the "true" meaning of Christmas. (Hint: it's not supposed to be consumerism, even though it is.)
FINISH YOUR DRINK IF: All is forgiven. (Interpret that as you will.)
FINISH YOUR DRINK IF: Someone who hates Christmas brings up the reason why out of nowhere (i.e. Gremlins).
As I continue my own traditions of watching these holiday films, I may add a rule or two to spice up the eggnog. For now, though, that should be enough for any Christmas movie in addition to the other usual clichés.
For the other holidays of the season, I'm woefully ignorant of many films centered around those particular holidays. But by all means point out the movies I could watch to formulate the Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Festivus lists, even if drinking isn't part of their celebrations. Regardless of what you're celebrating and what you're watching, may it be fun and peaceful.
